The Vintage: Track & Field

How we played the olympic back in the 80's

Track & Field
It was realesed by konami in 1984 (my year of birth :)) I remember the afternoon play time, when we pushed repeatedly our buttons and thought that we were flying in the track like Ben Johnson, for the ones that don't know who he is, he was like Usain Bold... preety fast actually.

Well, the purpose of this title was to compete in different summer olympic sports that were:
-100 meter Dash -Long jump -Javelin throw -110 Meter Herdles - Hammer Throw and High Jump. The player had three chances to accomplish the event to go to the next one. Considering that now we have the kinetic among us, where we almost literally compete in the sports, this game was quite boring and sucks badly hahaha but for us at that time it was like The Bomb!

Note: I'm not sure in this one but I kind of  remember we ran in a type of rug the made the role of the controller, which makes me wonder why we didn't have the kinetic before hahaha. (I'll leave you guys with the doubt.)

Ggive it a try =)

Street Fighter, The Original

Its was released back in 1987 by Capcom for arcade purposes, and it was the first fighting title released by this company, by the way, this version is hardly remembered at all because fighting games were not that popular until early 90's and that's why Street Fighter II did have a great spotlight debut.

The purpose of this game was to compete on one-on-one fights against other opponents that are computer controlled or controlled by another player. It was 2 out of 3 rounds, each one with a 30 second limit. Movements and attacks of the characters were kinda boring and generic, which made it the game repetitive (this was a detail that changed drastically in Street Fighter II when they included defined movements and styles for each fighter).

Characters

The all time classics like
Ryu
Ken
and Retsu, Geki, Joe, Mike, Lee, Gen, Birdie, Eagle, Adon and another classic, Sagat.

Well as far as I'm concerned this title began in Street Fighter II haha but you judge yourself watching this video. (No actual game this time =/)

The Vintage: Asteroids

Hi guys now that we are in "the end of the world" rumors, I remembered Asteroid, a very old vintage game, kind of lame if you ask me, but it is very freaking famous, which basically means my opinion is not relevant at all haha.

Asteroids was launched in 1979 by Atari, the aim of the game was to destroy asteroids avoiding them from crashing with your really pixelated ship, it's one of the most popular games of its time, in fact, it was the best-selling video game for quite a long time... one more time, in my opinion it really sucks but what do I know? haha.

Well, here I give you the opportunity to make your own judgment by playing the game yourself.

The Vintage: PONG

Hi guys I bet you heard about PONG. From what I remember it is the first game ever created, It's the games' freaking MOTHER hahaha. PONG came out in 1972, released by ATARI. The game is like so old that even I was not yet made, that is old.

The game was a huge success because of this new thing that involved playing with someone that was not really there, imagine how weird was to see a virtual screen with things that you could control with a stick, pretty weird right?

PONG was about a little pixel (it was supposed to be the ball, a square ball) that bounced back and forth following the stick position, it is still a very entertaing game.

Well guys for those who had never try it let me tell you: "Shame on you!" hahaha but here's a link for you to give it a try.

The Vintage: Duel (Test Drive)

Today we put ourselves in a very vintage mood.
The duel was a cross-platform racing game released by Accolade in 1987.
It was an excellently made game for its time; the player chose one of the five electable cars -Lamborghini Countach - Ferrari Testarossa - Porsche 911 Turbo - Chevrolet Corvette and my personal favorite the Lotus Esprit Turbo, I don't know why it is my favorite 'cause it was the slowest car hahaha. It was fun because you could drive across different paths simulating a real driving environment.
It was great; it is actually the first title I have in my memory.

This is the Duel II link because I didn't find the Duel online game
(It's sadly almost the same)

The Vintage: Super Mario World

Hi, today I'm remembering, what was a great game for its time, Super Mario World! It was released in 1990 by Nintendo for the SNES and it was the fourth game of the mario series.

The game itself was about Mario and Luigi trying to save a Dinosaur Land (Yoshi's hometown). Yoshi was a Dinosaur that helped Mario and Luigi complete all their quests with different kind of powers along with great jumping skills.

Super Mario World was a 2D game but had a very great 3D fake graphics that are way better than those on Mario 3. The no-lineal gameplay was great, just like in the previous title (Mario 3). Overall, the combination of great graphics and a very funny story makes this title a great-of-all-time game.

Here is a link for you to play the game!

The Vintage: Pro Moves Soccer

I'm a huge soccer fan, and taking advantage the Europa league Final was two days ago, I'm in a very good mood to talk about this sport. Just to make it clear there was no Radamel Falcao, no Diego, no Llorente in this video game, there was no realism present on this game, it was a title seen from above, I mean we watched only the hair color hahaha.

Pro Moves Soccer was released on 1993 for the Sega Genesis, and the title basically had all the soccer rules, with a referee, 11 players each team. These players could suffer injuries and they were transported off the field by medical personnel, pretty cool for and old game (even fifa doesn't include this in their titles).
It has three game modes: Exhibition game, World Cup and Training Mode. As far as I remember it was one of the first titles that let you customize your team as you wanted, with an unique uniform and your own emblem.

Well, give your self a try and tell me what do you think.

The Vintage: Streets of Rage 2

Today I’m kind of concern of all the bad news in the newspapers and in the morning news, but it works at least for something because I remembered a great Sega Genesis title, Streets of Rage 2 that to be honest is a lot like life nowadays.

It was a game that fits perfectly in the beat 'em up gender, a linear story with a lot of action.

The aim of this game was to rescue Adam that was kidnapped in the beginning of the game and you must get him back using one of four characters (Axel, Blaze, Max and Sammy “skate” little Adam´s brother).

It was a path of 8 very challenging worlds filled with a lot of gang members and all kind of improvised weapons like pipes and more... Oh yeah! And the best of all the game was its soundtrack. It was amazing very well adapted to the levels, I could believe its one of my favorites.

Here's a link for you to try it.

The Vintage: Sonic The Hedgehog 2

It was great game that was released by Sega in 1992 for the Sega Genesis (MegaDrive) and was starring Sonic the Hedgehog and his new ally TAILS a little fox.

The video game's aim was to master a variety of complex and very rapid series of worlds that took us step by step to defeat Dr. Robotnik that was the villain who tried to defeat us with all kind of creative machines of destruction.

It was a fun and extremely challenging game with graphics and superdetailed worlds for its time, a real jewel in video games.

Today I leave no link because an emulator is needed to run it, but the game is worth the search big time. If you play it please I want to hear what you think of it, as this is my favorite game of all time.

This game was released a few years ago as a download for PSN and Xbox Live.

The Vintage: Metroid

Today we'll talk about a great game, which is a classic NES title, "Metroid" released in 1987 by Nintendo.

Samus, the main character (a bounty hunter), goes right through the intergalactic universe where she tries to protect the galaxy from space pirates and their evil intentions to dominate the universe.

The title was characterized by a non-linear gameplay where there was no need to pick up or do all the missions to examine the stages so you could go at your own pace, which made it very original.

Personally, I see it like a really cool game although now I prefer the more realistic shooter type of titles and not humanoids but I'm still remembering Metroid with pleasure and excitement.

Try it yourself.

The Vintage: Castlevania

Today is Friday the 13th and I’m in the mood for zombies and mommies and “POP”. I remembered a great game with which I spend a lot of gaming hours  “CASTELVANIA” it was released by Konami in 1987 for the NES console.

This game is about a big war between the descendants of the Belmont family and Dracula that comes to the planet earth ones in a while back from the hell and brings with him all kind of zombies and demonic forces.

The player plays the role of Simon Belmont, and his armed with his legendary whip that has the property to get extended as you advance in the game; the game consists of six very difficult level (for me were very complicated) each of the levels of the game ends with a fight with a MAIN STAGE BOSS and they were inspired by horror creatures such as vampires, mummies, monsters, etc., and as the last character Dracula.

Give it a try and suffer the horrors of the 80's.

The Vintage: Duck Hunt

Released by Nintendo in 1984, it was one of the two games included in the release NES date. It was a third person shooter mode and the aim of it was to shoot ducks that flew across the screen (in those days we had a 14" screen and not a 32" LED hahaha). There was an additional mode, that changed ducks by disks... but it was less funny, by far.

The fun of this game relies primarily in the fact that the player used a gun instead of a control in the 80's it was of course a very revolutionary thing, and another funny thing about this game was the hunt dog that laughed at you when yo didn't hit a duck, the dog was actually the main picture of the game.

Give it a try , but I must warn you that it was much more fun with the gun.

The Vintage: Excitebike

Back in the day, the unnamed dude from "Excitebike" was our very own Travis Pastrana haha (quite distant of our Xgames today).
Excite bike was released by Nintendo in 1984 and the aim of this game was to race your motorcycle across ramps, oil stains and different classes of obstacles. It two game modes: solo race and multiplayer. The extreme cool thing about this title was that as far that I remember it was the first game that had the option to design your own racetrack and it was AWESOME, you could choose from a huge list different kinds of ramps and obstacles and race in your own track... very nice indeed.

Race for yourself and build one or two racetracks, it is still very cool.

The Vintage: Punch Out

Right now all I want to see in a boxing match is the fight "Floyd vs. Pacquiao", but more than 20 years ago we could play with players that were generic and imagine they were them haha.

Punch out was released in 1987 it was a boxing game developed and published by Nintendo itself. Recently a new version for Wii has been released.

In this title you played as Little Mac (same name as one of the creators of this blog). The aim is to work across professional boxing circuits, facing all kind of fictional boxers with strange moves and appearances, until you get to the World Heavyweight Championship Match against Mike Tyson in the original version and Mr. Dream in the later version.
Myke Tyson
The boxers' punches repertory are very limited but they are still very entertaining and the game was still excellent.

One of my favorite parts of the game was when little Mac was about to be knocked down and he started blinking in pink hahaha very funny.

Check it out this great title.

The Vintage: Bubble Boble

Hi guys today we are going to talk about a very corny but nice title, called Bubble Booble, it was release by Taito in 1986.

It´s a one or two player game, being one of the two little dragons available, Bud or Bob. The aim of it was to rescue their girlfriends that were kidnapped by the badass villain "Drunk", an enemy you have to fight at level 100.

The dragons were armed with the ability to throw bubbles (a very corny shit hahaha), the enemies that got caught exploded and died (not so corny, ha!). These bubbles were used to reach some places that were too high for the dragons to reach with their short pair of legs.

Some of the most appreciate stuff on this title were the secret items like:

The Watch: Stops the time.
Red Umbrella: 5 levels jump.
Red sneakers: Gives you speed.

And a lot more, but why don’t you better try it yourself and enjoy discovering the other cool stuff.

The cover may not be the greatest but the game is great.
